Margate Museum
Margate Museum, Old Market Place, Margate, 25th February 2009
The Investigation --19.30 -- weather outside cool
and dry 4 degrees centigrade. Outside noise was
quite high as the museum has pubs on each side.
We took this into consideration during the
investigation.
Team Members investigating -- Claire, Melanie,
Emma, Lynze, Ian, David and
Adam.
Guest Investigators -- Mick and Sue.
Equipment used: Camcorders, digital voice recorder,
digital cameras, EMF meter, laser thermometer,
motion detector.
The Margate Museum dates back to the early 1600's
and has been a Court, and a Police Station. You can
see from the picture (above right), where the original
building is on the left, and the building on the right
which was built later on in the late 19th century.
The most famous inmate in the cells at the station
was the Metropole murderer (this hotel was situated
on Fort Hill Margate before being demolished for the
widening of Fort Hill).
Harry Fox murdered his Mother and was later tried
and hung in Sussex.
My Dad used to be taken to the Police station when as a very young boy, (in the 1940's), as he used to wander off down the beach on his own, then get taken to the station where my frantic Nan would come and pick him up!
Currently due to funding, the Museum is shut to the Public which we all think is a crime as
this is a fundamentally important part in putting Margate back on the map.
The areas we were investigating were the main Courtroom, the Robe room and adjoining office, the old Police cells, and all the display areas. The temperature in all of the Museum
was around 14 to 15 degrees cntigrade. We also spent time in the meeting room in the Mayors building which is joined by a walkway to the main Courtroom.
After meeting all of the Team, we spent a little while getting used to this fascinating Museum. It seems that the whole history of Margate and more is documented and displayed and we all found ourselves getting into the history around us.
We started the investigation with our spiritual protection and decided to go straight
into a ouija board (as always we do not recommend using the board unless it is opened and closed properly). A spirit came through and after further questioning, it said its name was Mr Fox and that he had killed his Mother. After further questions, he said that his Mother was a cruel Woman and that is why he did it. During this session, we heard banging and
tapping coming from the door to the Court room. Melanie then sensed a Woman come in
and then we felt there was some kind of tossle between the two. During this time myself
and other Team members saw a dark shadow moving behind Emma and Melanie. Melanie felt uncomfortable with this presence.
We then decided to split into groups.
Adam and Ian were to bravely sit and do a vigil in separate cells downstairs. I gave Ian a walkie talkie and a camcorder and Adam went to the other cell with a camcorder.
During this session, the walkie talkies were not working as was Ian's camcorders battery died. All these pieces of equipment were fully charged prior to the investigation.
Mick, Sue and Emma stayed in the main Courtroom where they heard bangs and captured orbs on digital camera. See below.
Myself, Melanie, Lynze, Kate and David went into the Robe room where earlier, myself and Emma had felt a presence. Earlier in the evening, the cupboard door in the corner of the room
was slightly opened, but on this visit, the door was opened wider which was noticed by other
Team members. During this session, we called out and heard rustling and shuffling.
We then decided to take a break.
On returning, Ian had said that when he was in the cells, he could hear banging upstairs which would have been in the Robe room. We did not make any banging noises in the Robe room and spent the whole time standing very still. Also there was very little space to move
around as this room was full of books and obviously used as a store room.
We then decided to go across the walkway to the Mayers building. There had been reports
of a presence in the hallway by the toilets and the mayors room. We all stood and sat
quietly and Emma said she had seen a block of mist and was obviously quite uncomfortable
in that area.
We then, all 10 members, went throught to the Mayors meeting room where there are pictures of many of the Mayors through the years. I did not feel any presence in this room
as did many of the Team. Melanie did sense a tall Man in a black tunic who felt he was
very important.
Shortly after this, we decided to return into the main Courtroom for another ouija board session. During this session, a spirit came through as JP which we interpruted as Justice
of the Peace. I then proceeded to sit at the opposite side of the Courtroom in the Judges
chair and started calling out. During this time, the other Team members continued with
the ouija board. As I was calling out, the board was spelling out that it wanted to kill me which I was not happy about really!
Shortly after this, I heard a long groan from behind me by the wall at the back of me. At the same time at the opposite side of the room, the same groan was heard by the Team.
After this we decided to have another short break.
On returning, myself Emma and Kate decided to have a vigil in the downstairs exhibit room
situated in the 1600's building. The other Team members were upstairs in the courtroom.
During this vigil, we all felt very uncomfortable and heard a bang of wood outside the room.
On further investigation we found cupboard doors open in the other exhibit room.
We then swapped round and myself, Melanie and Ian sat in the exhibit room.
We heard bangs and Ian thought he saw a shadow go past the door.
We then thought that we should finish the investigation.
Here is an additional report by Melanie.
After an initial lit walk around all the rooms at the museum, the whole group performed a protection circle in the Court Room with the lights off. The Team then conducted a vigil using the letters of the alphabet and a tumbler. The tumbler began very slowly and spelt out the letters WB. Emma at this stage saw something standing in the doorway and felt unable to look at it. The tumbler spelt out yes to being a made and yes to dying there (though f this was in the vicinity of the museum or the court room itself we did not ascertain. We were then given the initials WM before whoever it was said "goodbye". Emma at this point commented that she still could not look behind Lyndsey in the direction of the door and corridor. Emma also commented on a cold draught. We established contact with another spirit (or could have been the previous one), through the glass who replied no to host of questions asked in trying to obtain its identity before also saying goodbye. The group then introduced themselves and after a fashion the name FOX was spelt out though not in correct letter order. Once though Claire asked if it was Mr Fox and if he had killed his mother (details of this criminal are posted on the cell door on the ground floor), the tumbler began spinning angrily. I could pick up the sensation of someone behind me at this point. It began as a dark cold feeling that affected by back and neck, but developed in my minds eye into a person leaning over me with a menacing face.
Emma who was next to me, confirmed that it was freezing cold. Emma also confirmed that there was a shadow behind me that she did not like. Mick, who was on the other side of me, commented he was hot at this stage. The group all heard three clicks and the tumbler was still moving in circles. I felt a woman had come in the room that might have been Mr Fox's mother who did prevent him communicating intermittently. I saw her briefly in white, quite short, quite plump and busty and also severe looking. She had her arms folded in a disapproving manner but she did not or was not able to contact us through the tumbler. The group commented that it felt like anger, frustration and that whoever was doing this was playing with us. At 20.08.56 a moan is recorded on David's video recorder.
At 22.07 a high pitched noise like a woman singing is recorded on David's video recorder. Mick took a picture of the back wall after this session and got a very large orb with an eye in the middle. David himself reports feeling quite uneasy at this location and said he would definitely not have gone into any part of the museum on his own. Myself, Claire, Kate, Lyndsey, Ian and David all went to the back store room which felt very strange indeed. The whole room seemed to shift to me like it was fluid. Some thing definitely lurked in the back cupboard, the door of which we were all sure had opened more from the lit walk around. I felt that this entity travelled from this cupboard along the back of the self standing shelving to the other corner and then back again. It did not like us being there but I could not get a fix on what it looked like. When I focussed on it with my mind it just seemed to evade me. The room was cold and very oppressive. We heard a couple of clicks there. I glanced into the corridor and saw a light move quickly past the doorway. No one was out there and no pictures were being taken at the time.
No one reported flashing their torch out there at the time. Emma confirmed that she heard shuffling footsteps going down th e corridor at the same time.
Myself, Ian and David sat outside the toilet corridor for a while quietly. No sound was recorded on camera but Ian and I were very wary about looking in the mirrors too long. Ian volunteered to hold a solo vigil in the cell that Mr Fox had reportedly been locked in. Ian reports that not much happened but he did hear bangs and footsteps above him and that they were unusually regular in their occurrence. Ian did not feel scared in the cell and that time went quickly in there. There were no visual occurrences to report and he had a sense that it had not been used very often. When the team tried to contact him on the walkie talkie, both walkie talkies went wrong and strange sounds came of them both.
Myself, Claire and Ian went into the ground floor side room of the museum, where we had the impression of someone walking past the door. I had the feeling that the room may have been used for interrogation at one point in history.
